I watched a little bit of Silent Movie today because Bernadette Peters is in it. There's a part where she's in a banana and they're playing some song. I don't know what the song was but I like it a lot, so I tried typing it in Google. I wasn't really paying attention to what I typed, so instead of "bernadette peters in a banana" (which is a weird freaking search, anyway), I entered, "bernadette in a peters banana." That didn't return anything, so I erased the 'a': "bernadette in peters banana." Still no results. Thankfully.

Live TV almost always guarantees a laugh. Especially on Will & Grace. Check out the East and West Coast broadcasts from a couple of weeks ago. http://www.nbc.com/nbc/Will_&_Grace/live/

The East Coast one is funny when Grace squirts herself, but the other one had me laughing my ass off. "My precious!" Ha!

On another note, I watched Female Perversions today. It was pretty good. Actually, I can't say for sure whether it was good. I skipped to the sex scenes. Those were good, though. A movie I did watch in its entirety is Kissing Jessica Stein. I'm slightly reluctant to watch movies on network TV, though, because of the commercials and editing. Although I'm not a huge fan of movies with happy endings that seem completely pointless, I did think the ending was a bit unnecessary. Or rushed. That's it. They were in a relationship, they broke up (kind of), they got back together, they didn't have sex often enough, they broke up, three months later they've gotten on with their lives, the end. I don't know...it was a sweet movie overall.

Lifetime movies

I should stay away from them. They made me take up smoking and drinking. (This is a joke, for those of you who happen to stumble across this and actually believe what I say.) I don't know why I expected anything different. People don't watch a Lifetime movie and say, "Wow, that has really impacted my life" or "Oh man, that was a great movie! I did NOT expect that at ALL." Perhaps the only good Lifetime movie I've seen is Plain Truth and not only because Mariska starred in it. I think the actors could have been better (besides Mariska, of course) but the script was very well written. Except for the underlying love story. There is ALWAYS a love story. Why?! It's suicide for an otherwise decent movie. This weekend I watched FBI: Negotiator. It stars, amongst others, Elisabeth Röhm, whom I LOVE. It sounded like a good movie from the IMDb plotline ("An FBI agent (Elisabeth Röhm) must negotiate with a woman holding a hospital hostage in order to get her hands on an experimental drug.") It sucked from the beginning. They had Elisabeth spouting off "motherly" phrases. (e.g. "What did you just say to me?!") Who says that? To make it ten times more original and fascinating, they had her and her FBI partner, Frank Gerrard, fall in love. The movie ended happily ever after with the girl, the mom, and Frank all getting along, la dee da, butterflies, raindrops on roses, and it faded out to Frank giving Laura (Elisabeth) a piggyback ride. Awwwww. I missed half of the movie because of my excessive eye rolling. Why watch it then, you ask. I have three words for you: Elisabeth in pajamas. It was by no means skimpy, sexy lingerie, but it was hot nonetheless. Fastforward to that part if you can.

I'm writing a letter to Mariska requesting an autographed picture of her (well no kidding, who else would the picture be of). Since I am a perfectionist, the letter has to be perfect. Nice handwriting, no spelling errors, professional(ish)-sounding, and no cross-outs. I am almost completely finished with the letter and I'm trying to tell her that I know she and Peter will make wonderful parents. For some reason my hand writes a 'B' instead of a 'P', so now she has a husband named Beter. Lovely.

This, ladies and gentleladies, is my political ideologies essay for Civics.

Attached to every conceivable political issue is a stamp of either liberal or conservative. Though labeling ourselves as such gives us an idea of where we stand politically, it also tears us apart. Many debates have been started based solely on one’s political ideologies. While my opinions on many issues are definitive, I have been forced to open my mind to opposing viewpoints throughout the course of the semester.

The government’s role in education is one of many disputed issues. President Bush came out with the No Child Left Behind Act, which pressures states to move faster and further to improve the achievement of every student. It may seem like a good idea in writing, but it is rather ineffective when acted upon. While it is not entirely unsuccessful, there are several predicaments to face, such as the high expectations and low funding. Although I agree with the idea behind NCLB, I am not enthusiastic about how it has been organized. My position on this topic could be classified as moderate.

The argument about prayer in school is a highly debated matter. Schools have the right to allow prayer or anything that could be considered as much, such as the Pledge of Allegiance. At the same time, students have the right to refuse to participate in such undertakings. However, an excess amount of religious activities in a public school compromises the students’ rights to freedom of religion. My opinion on this would likely be categorized as moderate.

A substantial concern in this country is how best to combat the use of drugs. While I in no way condone one’s drug use, I do not agree with the harsh punishment that is sometimes administered to these users. Probation and the attendance of a drug rehabilitation program is a suitable sentence for the person using the drugs. The distributors, on the other hand, deserve severe sentences to deter the dispersion of drugs, if nothing else. My belief on this could again be considered moderate.

The current condition of the environment is the primary concern of many. Although my life is not centered on environmental issues, I try to help out when possible. The obstacles we face concerning the environment are excessive, leaving us no choice but to change our lifestyles. Minor ways of helping out include conserving electricity, recycling, and discarding trash in wastebaskets rather than on the ground. The stance I have taken on this problem can be described as moderate.

The controversy over affirmative action is undeniable. Some people believe that it is necessary to give minorities the rights they deserve. Others believe that it leads to reverse discrimination. Both aspects are correct and reveal the irregularities of such plans. Like the No Child Left Behind Act, affirmative action is a good idea, but it is restrained by certain circumstances. We need to find a way to accommodate both sides. This assessment of the situation can be termed moderate.

The dispute over censorship falls under the First Amendment, which guarantees the right to freedom of speech. What it fails to state is exactly how much freedom should be permitted. There are laws that try to further define what the Constitution left out. However, these laws are also incomplete and leave room for misinterpretation. While I do not agree with the ways in which many flaunt their First Amendment rights, I realize that they are entitled to them. We should limit our restrictions on people’s rights because, in taking away their rights, we are ultimately taking away our own. My attitude on censorship is painted as liberal.

The center of many political feuds is the war in Iraq. At the beginning of the war I did not care much for politics, nor did I have a position on it. However, as time went on and casualties went up I began to feel that the war was unnecessary. It was only after President Bush repeatedly remarked that we would not leave Iraq until we won the war on terror that I became strongly opposed to the war. I have since argued that the war on terror is endless and I doubt many disagree with that point. This approach to the war is pegged as liberal.

“An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.” These are the words of ADA Alexandra Cabot on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Granted, she was not referring to the death penalty when she said this, but it can be easily applied. Many people hold the “eye for an eye” revenge mentality. While I may wish death on someone, whether it be a hardened criminal or my next-door neighbor, it is not my right to execute them, nor should it be anyone else’s. My thoughts on the death penalty are defined as liberal.

Abortion is a topic that is not only political but is also emotional. Many look at abortion as murder while others describe it as a woman’s right. Personally I do not agree with abortion except in certain circumstances, such as saving the mother’s life. I especially despise the use of abortion as a form of birth control. However, it is not my right to say what another woman can and cannot do with her body. If a woman is desperate enough, she will find a way to have an abortion, sometimes killing herself in the process. Making safe abortions available to women after they have first been informed of their other options is in everyone’s best interest. This view on abortion is characterized as liberal.

When dealing with important constitutional issues, gay marriage is a topic that is frequently brought up. Many people condemn it because it goes against their religion or because they believe that people would then want to marry animals or inanimate objects. I have always found these arguments ridiculous, as marriage is a decision that two people enter together and it requires a degree of self-awareness. Since animals and inanimate objects are incapable of such reason, it is impossible for them to enter into the intellectual contract of marriage. I believe that marriage benefits should be available to all couples, whether the institution is referred to as marriage or as a civil union. Once again, my opinion can be described as liberal.

While it is clear that I have taken a stand on many issues, I don’t intend to come across as pompous or narrow-minded. The lessons I have learned in this class are not only academic, but they have also taught me to open my mind to other people’s opinions. Freedom often comes at great costs. Often that cost is to listen to people whose views we don’t share. As was stated by Voltaire, “I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it.”

According to a new poll from Bravo and Star magazine, Brad and Angelina's wedding would be the party most people would like to attend. And they would be thrilled to see Cameron Diaz jumping out of their birthday cake.

Nearly half of the respondents chose the Angie and Brad nuptials as the most desired.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes came in with only 25%, just ahead of Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi who slipped in at 18%.

HOTEL CALIFORNIA

“Are you ready yet?” Evan yelled to his wife, Jules. They had just gotten married the day before and already he was starting to regret it. They were getting ready to leave for their honeymoon in Los Angeles, but Jules was taking over an hour to pack. Evan sighed and pulled his suitcase to his old beat-up Chevy Impala. “I’m sorry! I’m ready,” sang Jules as she walked outside with her bags. “You do know we’re only staying for three nights?” asked Evan and Jules made a face at him.

Jules slept most of the way to Los Angeles, which was about a three-hour drive from where they lived. When they arrived Evan drove around for awhile, trying to find a motel that was nice but affordable. He finally decided on a slightly worn Super 8 motel. Jules continued to sleep as Evan parked and went in to pay for a room.

The motel was surprisingly dark and Evan’s eyes took a moment to adjust. He walked over to the front desk where there was a small man in an overcoat sitting down reading a book. Evan approached the desk but the man didn’t look up. Evan cleared his throat, and the man glanced up, somewhat startled. “Sorry about that. You ever get so caught up in a book…” He trailed off. “What can I do ya for?”

“You the manager?” Evan asked and the man nodded.

“Uh…I’m here with my wife,” Evan began. “We’re on our honeymoon. We’ll need a room for the next three nights.”

“Ah, love,” the manager said with a knowing smile. “Three nights…that’ll be $180.” Evan paid him and got the key for their room. When he came back out, he gently shook Jules to wake her up. She stumbled to the room, guided by Evan, who was attempting to carry all three bags at once. When they opened the door they immediately noticed a bad smell coming from inside. Evan dropped the suitcases with a thud. “It’s not so bad,” he said. “Once we get used to the smell…”

“And the lack of light,” added Jules, pointing to the overhead fixture which had only a few slivers of light coming from it. “It looks like something’s blocking it,” she said. “Evan, why don’t you check it?” He groaned. “It’s probably just insects.”

“Please just check it anyway,” she insisted. He groaned again and stood on the edge of the bed. He made a face and gagged. “I think the smell is coming from here,” he choked, beginning to unscrew the dome that protected the light bulb. Jules nervously stuck her fingers in her mouth, gnawing on her nails. “Oh dear God,” Evan whispered, jumping off the bed and showing the contents of the dome to Jules. She covered her mouth and whimpered as she saw the cut up body parts nestled inside.

A knock at the door startled them both. The door, which they had neglected to shut earlier, fell open and the motel manager walked inside. He held out a basket filled with champagne and other goodies and said, “Since it’s your honeymoon, I figured I’d-” He left off, spotting the dome and it’s contents in Evan’s hands. “It’s not – it’s not what it looks like,” stammered Evan, trying to explain.

“Even so, you’ll understand why you must talk to the police,” the motel manager said. “Leave that on the bed and come with me. You too,” he said, gesturing towards Jules.

They both obeyed him and followed him into a small room in back of the hotel. Evan again tried to explain the situation as the manager shut and locked the door. “I really am innocent.”

“I know,” said the manager, pulling a large switchblade out of his coat pocket.

Feeling a lot happier, and I may just stick around the S-K.net boards for reasons other than my love for S-K. There's been a continuing conversation between myself and one of the members in a few different threads. It seems we both have a love for Alanis, particularly her song "Ironic." Anyhow, this person said "Agent Starling [my name on the board] is good people, I can tell already." How nice...it made me happy.
